Frequently Asked Questions

Why spiritual direction?

Trappist monk and modern-day mystic Thomas Merton once said the purpose of spiritual direction is to penetrate beneath the surface of our lives, to get behind the façade of conventional attitudes we present to the world, and to lead us toward inner spiritual freedom and inmost truth. We agree. As spiritual “directees” ourselves, we attest that this ministry is helpful for discovering (and re-discovering) our true selves, for discerning the work of God’s Spirit in us and in the world around us, and in companioning one another throughout the challenges and seasons of life.

What Exactly is spiritual direction?

We believe a spiritual director’s role is to meet you where you’re at on your own unique journey, not to push his or her own agenda or influence you toward certain beliefs. The ministry of spiritual direction is especially concerned with our actual, ongoing experience of and relationship with God, the Ground of All Being. Ultimately, the Holy Spirit is the true Spiritual Director, and our training leads us to help others discern how they might draw closer to God and get in touch with what’s going on inside their souls.

How much does it cost?

The directors in our network manage their own fees, many on a generous sliding scale and with varying options for payment. Some have a scholarship fund to make spiritual direction available for anyone.

Where would we meet?

We are a dispersed network, so each director has different preferred meeting locations. Some also do Skype, Google Hangouts and phone appointments.

Can you describe a typical session?

A typical spiritual direction ‘session’ often involves a personal update by the directee interspersed with questions from the director, and periods of contemplative prayer, silent meditation, Lectio Divina, and reflection. While sessions often happen one-on-one in a quiet setting, spiritual direction can also be done in groups, in settings like the outdoors, and by using different mediums like art and journaling.
